increased by $250,000 as there are still considerable arrears of maintenance to be made up.
Two new items, Maintenance of Vehicles,
$890,000, and Maintenance of Workshops, $90,000, have been inserted. The Public Works Department has now taken over contr 1 of all Government Motor Vehicles and those provisions are necessary for their proper maintenance. The itor Running Expenses of Motor Vehiclcs, $400,000 providos for the running expenses of vchicles controlled by all departments, of the Public Works Department except waterworks. $500,000 was allowed for this in the 1946/47 Estimates. Running Expenses of Waterworks vehicles are provided for under Miscellaneous - Waterworks "Running Expenses of Motor Vohicles". $60,000 has been included as against $70,000 in the 1946/47 Estimates,
$1,758,602.

Public Works Extraordinary
The Public Works Extraordinary programme is being mot from loan funds and the Hoad is being kept open by the inclusion of provision for a comparatively minor item of expenditure.
Head 30. Royal Observatory
Personal Emoluments
The staff has been increased by the revival of the post of Assistant Director and the provision of an additional Professional Assistant. A now post of Marine Liaison Officer has been created. Two extra computers, an additional Lithographer and a Stone Polisher have been provided for but this is partly offset by a roduction of one Assistant Lithographer and one Printer. In addition it proved necessary to engage an armed guard during the present year in order to guard tho Observatory Compound. The net increase in Personal Emoluments is $17,887.
Other Chargos
The net increase of $40,200 is largely accounted for by the increased provision of $40,000 for Upper Air Investigation, $2,000 for the Maintenance of Instruments and Plant, $2,000 for the Upkeep of Motor Vehicles and minor increases in other items which are largely offset by small decreases clsewhere.
The net increase on the whole Hoad is $58,087.
Head 31. Sanitary Department
Personal Emoluments
There is an increase of three temporary clerks. Two of these, have been transferred from the Medical Department and one is required for the Cemetery Office. A draughtsman Class II has also been transferred from the Modical Department whose task it will be to check plans and ensure that alterations are carried out as
